Marriage & Family Educator
Teresa Marie Walters, MA, LMFT, LAC
As a licensed marriage and family therapist and licensed addiction counselor, my multidimensional, private practice is designed to provide you with a safe, effective, and tailor-made approach to your unique therapeutic needs.
Utilizing a combination of holistic psychotherapy, family-systems coaching & marriage, and family education, I help individuals, couples, and families build strong relational bonds, heal deep emotional woundedness, and strengthen the family unit in a private, discreet, and cozy, home-like setting.
If you are ready to start your transformational journey to relational, emotional, behavioral, and spiritual health and well-being, give me a call. It would be my pleasure to help you construct your preferred vision of the future and plot the course to the life you always thought was possible.
I believe that relational and emotional pain and mental distress are not diseases or disorders to be treated or conditions from which to recovery but rather traumatic responses to the real-life experiences, conditions, and situations to which you have been exposed.
Rather than being physical maladies or biomedical brokenness, these traumatic responses are normal and often adaptive reactions to be shared, validated and relationally healed within one’s self, in relationship with others, through the loving-kindness of God and God’s Son, Jesus.
“…the question is never what’s wrong with you, but rather what happened to you?”
I provide a unique, non-medicalized, approach to health and healing that embraces a three-tier, multidimensional paradigm. The first tier of this approach takes a holistic psychotherapeutic position that recognizes the relationally interconnected nature of a person’s body, soul and spirit.
The second tier frames the systemic structure of the family as the most basic unit of human relationship and connectedness and a key element in facilitating internal and external health, while the third tier distinguishes the value of educational instruction and insight into the dynamic and interdependent nature of marriage and the family unit.
Together, these three tiers, holistic psychotherapy, family-systems coaching, and marriage & family education, provide a comprehensive and effective multidimensional approach for addressing relational, emotional, behavioral, and spiritual health, happiness and wholeness.
The Principles that Guide my Work:
My work is undergirded by a number of Biblical principles and experiential lifeworld pre-assumptions that include, but are not limited to
- A biblical orientation of God as the originating Author of all Truth.
- All human beings as intrinsically valuable and image-bearers of the creative God even in their fallen state.
- All Truth is God’s Truth. God’s Truth can be found in every field of inquiry. (Pearcey, 2005).
- People make sense in the context of their lived experiences.
- Behavior is an external manifestation of a person’s internal beliefs, perceptions, thoughts, and emotions.
- Painful emotional experiences are perceived as unendurably traumatic when they occur outside of the context of the person’s known lifeworld or context and in the absence of a secure relational and emotional attachment to others (Stolorow, 2011).
- Emotional and mental pain are not illnesses or disorders to be treated or from which to recover.
- Emotional and mental pain are trauma responses to be validated, shared, and relationally healed in self, with others, through Christ.
Theological Framework of Shalom:
At the end of Christ’s ministry on earth, during the last supper, Christ tells His disciples that He is giving them a new commandment.
“I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another”
(John 13:34, Amp.).
Shortly thereafter, Christ tells his disciples,
“Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you”
(John 14:27, Amp.).
This peace, as expressed by Strong, Kohlenberger & Swanson, (2001), and translated as Eirene in Greek, follows the same meaning and usage of the Hebrew word Shalom in the Old Testament.
This endowment of peace, God’s peace, God’s Shalom given through Christ reinforces God’s desire for His creation to live in a state of harmony, tranquility, safety, health, and at “peace with God.
In its full measure,
God’s Shalom is the promise of right relationship with God, with self, with others, and with the communities and larger systems of which all humankind is a part.
Holistic psychotherapy is an integrative approach that recognizes the relational interconnection between your spirit, soul (mind) and psychical body.
It is a form of talk-therapy that explores the multi-dimensional factors that impact your sense of wholeness and well-being.
Family-systems coaching is described best as a supportive process in which the individual client partners with a coach to increase self-awareness, self-definition and self-regulation skills.
Family-systems coaching is a personal growth process that results in a greater sense of self, maturity, reduced reactivity, and increased differentiation which in turn, supports healthier relationships with self and others.
